Welcome to Bikram Yoga Norwich! We are so happy that you’ve decided to join us. We guarantee that a regular Bikram Yoga practice will change your life in the most wonderful ways. If you feel nervous, scared, or a little intimidated, no problem. Many people feel that way initially. Don’t let it stop you from coming to class. Bikram designed this class for beginners. With a little practice and experience, you’ll quickly feel right at home.
In order to maintain harmony and to preserve the environment, we ask that you read and abide by the following studio policies:
Please Remove Your Shoes:
As you enter the reception area, please remove your shoes and place them by the door or in the cubicles.
Sign in at the front desk or swipe your card before going to the changing rooms or placing your mat in the yoga studio. No exceptions.
When To Arrive For Class:
Doors open 30 minutes prior to class time. Plan to arrive with enough time to set your mat down before the class starts. Late comers will not be admitted.
Maintain Silence in Yoga Room:
Please be silent in the yoga room, before, during and after class. Walk in and out of the yoga room quietly and close the door quietly behind you. Please turn off all watches that beep hourly in the yoga room. The class is practiced in silence, only the teacher talks during the 90 minutes of class. Breathing, concentration, focus, and silence are core skills of a strong yoga practice.
Place your mat up to the line on the floor, maintain a line with other students, and make sure you can see yourself in the mirror. Using the mirrors will help you build the connection between mind and body, focus, balance, and posture. Please do not block the person behind you. In a full room you need only see a portion of yourself. Beginners may take the back row, more practiced students please stay to the front.
You may enjoy the hot room in silence as soon as the doors open. Please do not touch the thermostat or the mirrors. As you lie down in savasana, please make sure your feet face the back wall and not the mirrors, and stay seated on your mat until the teacher asks you to rise for the start of class.
What Can I Bring In The Room:
Only water is allowed in the yoga room. No food, glass or other drinks. Please do not bring in shoes, flip flops, gum, cell phones, or bags. Leave personal items in the changing rooms, and if it is valuable, please leave it at home. If you use tissues due to sinus problems or allergies, please keep them on your mat and off the yoga floor.
Be Mindful Of Peoples Allergies:
As we sweat we detox our system, what is on our skin comes out in the room. Please shower off all cologne, perfume, scented lotions before class starts. If you smoke, please shower before class. All of these can cause a reaction to the person next to you.
No water is taken until after the third posture (Eagle Posture) to help you warm up the body. After this you may drink water as you need it throughout the class. Avoid gulping and drink only small amounts to help you maintain posture comfort. Please drink only between the postures, not while others are balancing in a posture to minimize distraction.
Stay In The Yoga Room:
Stay in the yoga room for the duration of the class unless it is an emergency. If you feel dizzy or nauseous at any point, feel free to take a break and sit down or take a knee. You are detoxing and it can take a few classes to get past this. Work on your breathing, and join us when you are ready. Leaving class is very disruptive to other students in the room, it throws off the group energy and breaks concentration. Most people find class challenging, pace yourself by taking it one posture at a time. Everyone's ability in each posture may be different. You are guaranteed to get the benefits of Bikram Yoga by doing the best that you can and every day is different. Please use the bathroom before class starts.
Remember to BREATHE! Breathing continuously will make the class easier for you, yet it is very common to forget while concentrating on the postures. If you need to, please feel free to stop for a moment. Calm your breath and heart rate by standing still, looking at yourself in the mirror and inhaling/exhaling through your nose. If you really need to, you can sit down. Always breathe through your nose, mouth closed.
Stillness Between Postures:
Try to practice stillness between your postures as this conserves your energy and strengthens your focus and concentration. Please do not wipe off your sweat, this is the body’s own cooling system, the more you practice the more you learn to enjoy the process.
Please wait until the teacher has left the room before you leave. Take this time to enjoy and relax in your final savasana. This is where the body really is absorbing the effects of the practice and beginning to change – refreshing, revitalizing and reorganising itself in every cell and molecule. Give yourself at least 3 minutes before leaving the hot room.
We Love To Sweat:
To sweat is to detox which is wonderful for your body. If you are a heavy sweater, please help us maintain the floor and wipe up any large sweat puddles you have left behind. Place all Bikram towels in laundry baskets, and hang up your rental mats in the designated area.
Please take quick showers after class as others are waiting to use them.
